Gutter Installation

Seamless aluminum and half-round gutters, box gutter relining, leaders and scuppers, installed by a roofer and tested with water before we leave.

Bayonne Superior Roofing handles gutter installation in Bayonne, NJ, serving surrounding cities including Roselle Park, North Arlington, Guttenberg, East Rutherford and Rutherford. For 20+ years we have treated gutters as part of the roof rather than an add-on, because most of the gutter problems we are called about start at the roof edge above them.

We install seamless aluminum gutters and half-round gutters, reline and repair the box gutters built into many older houses, and install and repair the leaders, scuppers and conductor heads that drain flat roofs. We also repair and clean existing gutters when they still have years left in them, and we tell you honestly when they do.

Every gutter job ends the same way: the gutters, leaders and outlets are run with water to confirm they flow, and the yard and sidewalk are cleaned before we leave. A gutter that looks fine but overflows at a low spot in the first storm is not a finished job.

Seamless Aluminum Gutters and Leaders

Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on site from a coil and cut to the exact length of each run, so the long straight sections have no joints to leak. The only seams are at the corners, end caps and outlets, which we seal and fasten properly so they stay tight through freeze and thaw.

We match leaders to the gutters and size the outlets to the roof area they serve. A roof with a large slope draining to one corner needs more outlet capacity there than a short run over a porch, and getting that right is what keeps a gutter from overflowing in a heavy downpour.

Half-Round Gutters for Older Houses

Half-round gutters have a rounded profile that suits many older and prewar houses better than the more common K-style shape. They are hung on exposed brackets and drain well because their smooth curve leaves debris fewer corners to catch on.

We install half-round gutters with matching round leaders and brackets, and we fit them so they line up with the existing trim. On a house where the original gutters were half-round, this keeps the roof edge looking like it belongs to the house.

Pitch, Hangers and Placement

A gutter has to slope toward its outlet, sit low enough to catch water running off the shingles and be fastened firmly enough to carry snow, ice and wet leaves. Gutters that are hung flat, too high or on widely spaced hangers sag and hold water, which is how fascia boards rot.

We set the pitch with a line, use hidden hangers fastened into solid wood and space them so the gutter will not sag under load. Where the fascia is too soft to hold a fastener, we replace the board first.

Drip Edge and Fascia Behind the Gutter

Water that runs behind a gutter is almost always a roof edge problem. Without metal drip edge at the eaves, runoff curls back under the shingle edge and down the face of the fascia, rotting the wood and staining the soffit even when the gutter itself is perfectly sound.

We add or replace drip edge, replace rotted fascia and soffit boards and then hang the gutter so the drip edge lands inside it. On houses built before 1978, painted trim is disturbed only under the EPA RRP lead-safe rule, with the work area contained and cleaned.

Box Gutters, Scuppers and Flat Roof Drainage

Box Gutter Relining and Repair

Box gutters are built into the eave or cornice of many older houses and hidden behind the trim, so a leak shows up as rot in the cornice or a stain on the wall below rather than a visible drip. Their linings crack with age, and the joint at the outlet to the leader is a frequent failure point.

We reline sound box gutters with a new membrane or metal lining, reflash the outlet and test the whole run with water. Where the wood structure behind the lining has rotted, we open it up and show you before deciding whether to rebuild the box or convert to a hung gutter.

Scuppers, Conductor Heads and Leaders

Flat roofs on two-family, mixed-use and commercial buildings often drain through scuppers in the parapet wall into conductor heads and leaders. When a scupper clogs or its flashing cracks, water backs up on the roof and finds its way into the wall.

We clear and reflash scuppers, replace rusted or split conductor heads and rehang loose leaders. Each outlet is tested with water before the job is done, because a flat roof is only as good as the route its water takes off the building.

Commercial Gutter Systems

Commercial and mixed-use buildings tend to have long gutter runs, larger roof areas draining to fewer outlets and leaders that pass over sidewalks and entrances. Overflow there is more than an annoyance; it ices walkways in winter and stains storefronts.

We size commercial gutters and leaders to the roof area they serve, add outlets where runs are too long and route leaders so they discharge where water will not create a hazard. Work is scheduled around business hours where possible.

Gutter Repair and Cleaning

Leaking Seams and Sagging Runs

Many gutter problems can be repaired rather than replaced: resealing leaking corners and end caps, refastening pulled hangers, re-pitching a run that holds water and replacing a crushed section of leader. We repair when the gutter itself is still sound and tell you when it is not worth the money.

If the gutters are thin, heavily dented or rusted through in several places, a seamless replacement usually costs less over time than repeated repairs, and we price both options so you can compare.

Gutter Cleaning and Flow Testing

Clogged gutters overflow against the fascia, drop water onto the foundation and, in winter, hold ice that feeds ice dams at the eaves. We clean gutters and leaders by hand, flush the leaders to clear clogs below the outlet and check every hanger and seam while we are up there.

The same visit is a quick look at the roof edge from the ladder. If we see lifted shingles, loose drip edge or a cracked pipe boot nearby, we photograph it and tell you, so a small issue is caught before it becomes a leak.

Where the Water Goes

A gutter only does its job if the water ends up somewhere harmless. Leaders should discharge away from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away from the house or into an approved drain, not against the basement wall.

On narrow lots and shared side yards, we route leaders so they do not send water onto a neighbor’s property or across a walkway where it can freeze. That is a small detail that prevents a lot of friction between neighbors.

Our Gutter Installation Process

Step 1: Inspect the Roof Edge and Existing Gutters

We check the drip edge, fascia, soffit, current gutters and leaders, and we note where water currently overflows or stains the wall. Those stains show us where the old system was failing and where the new one needs more capacity.

Step 2: Written Estimate by Run

The estimate lists each gutter run, leader, outlet and any fascia or drip edge repair as separate lines. You can see what each part of the job costs and compare it with another estimate item by item.

Step 3: Install and Seal

Gutters are formed or fitted, pitched and hung on hidden hangers, with corners, end caps and outlets sealed. Leaders are fastened to the wall and routed so the discharge lands where it should.

Step 4: Water Test and Clean Up

Every run is tested with water to confirm it drains without overflowing at a low spot. The yard and sidewalk are then cleaned, including a magnet sweep for any fasteners or nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why have a roofer install gutters instead of a gutter-only company?

Gutters and the roof edge work as one system. Most gutter leaks we see are really problems with missing drip edge, rotted fascia or a gutter hung too low to catch the runoff. A roofer can fix the edge and the gutter in the same visit, so water ends up in the gutter instead of behind it.

What are seamless gutters?

Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on site from a coil of aluminum, cut to the exact length of each run. With no joints along the straight sections, the only seams are at the corners and end caps, which removes the most common leak point on sectional gutters.

Can you repair my old box gutters instead of removing them?

Often, yes. Box gutters built into the eave are part of the look of many older houses. When the wood structure is sound, we reline them with a new membrane or metal lining and reflash the outlet to the leader. If the wood behind the lining has rotted, we show you before deciding whether to rebuild or replace.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year for most houses, in late spring and again after the leaves fall. Houses under large trees may need more. Clogged gutters overflow against the fascia and foundation and, in winter, hold ice that adds to ice dams at the eaves.

Should I replace gutters when I replace my roof?

It is worth considering. New drip edge goes on with the roof, and the gutters have to sit correctly in relation to it. If your gutters are sagging, leaking at the seams or near the end of their life, replacing them with the roof saves a second setup and makes sure the edge details line up.

Where should my leaders discharge?

Away from the foundation and, where possible, onto ground that slopes away from the house or into an approved drain. On narrow lots and shared side yards, we also make sure the discharge does not send water onto a neighbor's property or across a walkway where it can freeze.

Do you work on gutters for commercial buildings?

Yes. We install and repair gutters, leaders, scuppers and conductor heads on mixed-use and commercial buildings, including the outlets that drain flat roofs through parapet walls. Every outlet is tested with water before the work is finished.
